Leave clutter at the bedroom door

The last thing you want from your bedroom is a space that will make you feel stressed. However, this is going to be the case if you have clothes scattered all around the room, spare blankets and bedding piled up in plain sight, as well as other belongings such as newspapers and magazines lying around.

Investing in wardrobes and chests of drawers will be enough to get rid of clutter associated with clothing obviously, though an ottoman placed at the end of your bed will be the perfect solution for holding all of your spare blankets and bedding.

If you have the space to do so, create storage solutions which fit under your bed too — slide-out drawers, for instance. They will be ideal for keeping any newspapers or magazines that you’re collecting safe.

A bedside cabinet will be a great investment as well, as you’ll be able to place books, sleeping masks and personal items into the drawers when you don’t need them and then have them close to hand whenever you’re relaxing on your bed.

Eliminate any elements of work

It can be difficult to switch off from work after leaving the office, but the task will be even harder if you have reminders of your job scattered throughout your bedroom.

Solve this problem by ensuring you never set up a desk within your bedroom, but instead place this in your living room or a study if you have one. All of your work notes, briefcases and office essentials should be placed here once you’ve finished working for the day.

Renowned designer Jonathan Scott, co-host of HGTV’s Property Brothers, underlined to online publication Mental Floss: “I don’t believe that you should have a work station in the bedroom.”

Ban technology

While we’re on the topic of what not to have in your bedroom, it will also be wise to ban as many forms of technology from the space as you can. We’re talking no televisions, smartphones, computers, games consoles or exercise equipment in this room.

Not only do these gadgets create distractions which will prevent you from totally relaxing when in bed, but studies have shown that the devices even steal sleep. For instance, research carried out at Harvard and the University of Toronto states that blue light emitted from TVs, smartphones and computers have been found to suppress natural melatonin in the body — a hormone that induces drowsiness.

Wave goodbye to technology from your bedroom and your body should be able to wind down much more naturally.

Don’t underestimate the power of a good mattress

Now that you know what not to have in your bedroom, it’s time to move onto the items that you should be introducing to the space — beginning with a good mattress.

Stressing the importance of a mattress, Mr Scott pointed out this simple fact: “A mattress is your most-used piece of furniture in the entire house. I don’t know why most people don’t realise that.”

When you’re investing in a new mattress then — which you should be replacing at least every eight to 10 years for both hygienic reasons and because they lose their support significantly over that time — you should check that it is supportive as well as comfortable to lie on.

The recommended firmness of a mattress will depend on the person using it though. A soft mattress is advised to those who either sleep on their side or change positions throughout the night, while a firm mattress is better suited to those who sleep on their front, weigh more than 15 stone or are prone to back pain.

Choose window coverings which keeps external lighting out

Whether you choose ceiling-to-floor curtains or a set of blinds for your window coverings, just bear in mind that you need darkness to sleep in the most effective manner and thus repair itself after a day of hard work.

Curtains are a good choice if you would rather control the amount of light that comes into your room yourself. However, blinds with blackout fabric lining will limit the amount of external light that can get into your room at night but then filters enough natural light around the space come the morning so that you can wake up as naturally as possible.

Decorate with artwork & plants

When it comes to some finishing touches to your bedroom, look no further than some serene artwork and a few plants.

Art that is calming and sleep-inducing in its design will help to punctuate the theme of a relaxing environment, though be sure to keep the artwork sparse as too many pieces hung around your bedroom will cause a far too distracting a space.

Plants are known to make people happy too, though it’s recommended that you choose low-maintenance varieties such as aloe and cacti so that you’re not spending every minute in your bedroom looking after them and cleaning up fallen leaves.
